Is Pyridium Safe for a Dog with Painful Urination?

Reader Question
Can I use pyridium for my dogs dysuria: he is already on an antibiotic also. Thank you

Answer from Our Team

Please don’t give Pyridium to your dog. Its active ingredient, phenazopyridine, is a human urinary pain reliever, and veterinary sources warn that it may be toxic to dogs and cats. Don’t give it unless your vet specifically prescribes it. That applies even when a dog is already on antibiotics.

Painful urination usually eases within a day or two once the right antibiotic is working. If your dog isn’t improving within about 48 hours, call your vet. The infection may need a urine culture to choose a better antibiotic, or another cause such as bladder stones may be involved. Your vet can also prescribe pain relief that is safe for dogs if he needs it.

Watch closely for straining with little or no urine coming out, particularly in a male dog, as this can mean a blockage and needs urgent care.
