Is Laser Therapy Worth Trying for a Dog With Knee Arthritis?

Reader Question
Our lab (age 6 yrs 9 mos) has arthritis in her right rear knee. We have just started her on anti-inflammatories but the vet also suggested laser treatment. Do you think this would be worthwhile and where can I learn more about this type of treatment. Thank you.

Answer from Our Team

Therapy laser (photobiomodulation) is widely offered for arthritis in dogs and is usually painless, but the research on how much it helps is mixed and mostly small. It's best seen as an add-on, not a replacement for proven measures.

The things with the strongest benefit for arthritic knees are keeping her lean, regular moderate exercise, vet-prescribed anti-inflammatory pain relief and physical rehabilitation. If she has an underlying cruciate tear, that should be identified too, as it's a common cause of knee arthritis in Labradors.
