How to Give Eye Drops to a Scared Dog

Reader Question
My 80 lb. Male( not castrated) Golden Retreiver/Lab dog ,( one year old), was traumatized at the Vet last evening when he needed to have a piece of bark removed from his left eye. Note that both of his eyes are infected with a bacterial infection on top of this.

Now, I am not able to administer the antibiotic eye drops that the Vet prescribed for both eyes.... Maple is too scared to allow me to get anywhere near his left eye, and runs away from me.... so how can I possibly do this... I only weigh 110 lbs. and even when he is lying down,, as soon as I approach him he is "on guard" & will not stay still! Please help..

Answer from Our Team

This is common after a frightening vet visit. Try approaching from behind or the side rather than face-on, with him sitting in a corner so he can't back away. Hold his chin up gently with one hand and rest the hand holding the bottle on top of his head, so it moves with him and stays out of his sight. Pair each drop with a high-value treat.

If you still can't do it safely, call your vet. They may switch to an ointment, change how often the drops are given, or have a technician show you how. Please don't skip doses, since both eyes are being treated for infection.

Our page on dog eye infections explains eye infection treatment.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
