How to Deal With Fleas in the Yard

Reader Question
Any suggestions for spraying for fleas in grass?

Answer from Our Team

Fleas mostly live in shady, sheltered spots, such as under decks and bushes, in leaf litter and where your dog likes to lie, rather than in open, sunny lawn. Keeping grass short, raking up leaves and debris and discouraging wildlife and stray cats from your yard can help.

Treating your pets is usually the most important step. Year-round flea control from your vet on every dog and cat in the household kills fleas that jump on before they can lay eggs, which breaks the cycle. If you also want to treat the yard, focus on shaded areas and follow the product label carefully, keeping pets off treated areas for as long as the label says.
