Answer from Our Team

Thank you for writing. A sudden, dry cough in an otherwise healthy dog is often kennel cough. Dogs can catch it without obvious contact with other dogs, because the germs travel through the air and on hands, clothing and shared objects. Other causes include irritants, an airway problem or something inhaled.

A small amount of honey is generally safe for most healthy adult dogs, but there's little evidence it shortens kennel cough, and repeated large doses add a lot of sugar. It shouldn't be given to diabetic or overweight dogs without your vet's advice. Rest, a harness instead of a collar and a smoke-free home are the most useful home measures.

See your vet if the cough lasts more than a week or so, or if your dog develops fever, lethargy, a poor appetite, nasal discharge or labored breathing. Our guide to kennel cough in dogs has more.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
