Reader Question
My 3 yo havanese gets groomed twice per month due to his therapy work. His skin is candy pink, and now he is licking his penis constantly. Upon examining the area his penis is now brown- black and the area apears tender. There is no hair loss or swelling. No blood or scabs. His coat us silky and shinny, and he has lots of energy.

Please advise.

Answer from Our Team

Constant licking can darken the skin over time, and a tender area suggests irritation or infection. Common causes include a bacterial or yeast infection, an infection of the sheath, allergies, or irritation from grooming products.

If the pink part of the penis itself has turned dark, is swollen or won't go back into the sheath, see a vet the same day. In long-coated dogs, hair can wrap around the penis and cut off its blood supply. Otherwise, have your vet examine the area and the sheath, take a swab and check his urine, and mention any new shampoos or grooming products.
