Reader Question
thought it was concrete poisoning. was always healthy since i got him, until we moved to the concrete house. his dog food is Diamond Natural chic & rice and sometimes BLUE. No fleas or worms. started hair loss a bit at a time, then ear infections, really bad. elephant skin, smelly skin. now going on 3rd year it started, hair under neck falling out and he is very itchy. A sac has appeared where his testicles used to be and filled with fluid that leaks onto floor. i'm always treating but does not stop it. Has his own bed with a sheet and his own private house, but prefers the concrete during day. Vet put him on an antibiotic but has been no help. German Shepherd-fixed male-8-years. no sores on him. skin is black and pink underneath

Answer from Our Team

Hair loss, thickened "elephant" skin, odor and ear infections over years usually point to an untreated allergy with yeast and bacterial infections, or a hormone disorder such as low thyroid. A fluid-filled swelling that leaks where the testicles were should be checked by your vet soon.

Ask for skin cytology for yeast, thyroid tests, and a referral to a dermatologist if antibiotics haven't helped. Concrete isn't poisonous, though lying on it can cause calluses and hair loss on elbows and other pressure points.

See itchy skin in dogs and yeast infections on dogs' skin.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
