Reader Question
My 10 year old boxer/pit mix has a growth on his leg. He licks at it occasionally but exhibits no other discomfort, is active and eating just fine.

Answer from Our Team

Boxers are prone to several skin growths, including benign ones and mast cell tumors, which can look like almost anything. Licking can mean it itches or irritates him.

A good rule from veterinary oncologists is "see something, do something": any lump the size of a pea (1 cm) or larger that has been there for a month should have a needle aspirate or biopsy. Your vet can usually do this in a few minutes.
