Reader Question
Our Zoe is a 14 year old, 40 lb female sharpei mix who is up on all shots and preventatives. I noticed this lump a month ago. I thought it was a skin tag at first. the lump has gradually been growing but not rapidly. It is located on her back leg. It doesn't seem to bother her.

Answer from Our Team

A lump that's growing, even slowly, is worth checking at her age. It may be benign, but some tumors on the legs, such as mast cell tumors and soft tissue sarcomas, are easier to remove completely while small.

A good rule from veterinary oncologists is "see something, do something": any lump the size of a pea (1 cm) or larger that has been there for a month should have a needle aspirate or biopsy. Ask your vet for a needle aspirate soon.
