Golden Retriever Puppy Urinating on Dog Beds
Reader Question
We have a 6 month old Golden Retriever. She came to us at 5 months old not house broke. We have 4 other dogs all house broke and older 5-10 years old. When the puppy comes back in after a potty outing she will get on one of the beds and bunch up the pad or blanket and intentionally urinate on it then lay down. It can anywhere from a few drops to almost full capacity. We just can not figure out what's going on. She has been tested for a UTI, was spayed recently. They did find she has a case of vaginitis and is on antibiotics for that. Were not sure if this is a behavior issue or a medical one.
Answer from Our Team
Urinating on soft bedding is often a house-training issue, especially in a puppy who arrived untrained and lives with other dogs. Vaginitis in a young female can also cause discomfort and accidents, so finishing treatment is important.
Go back to basics: frequent trips outside, rewards for going outdoors, supervision indoors, and crating when you can't watch her. Remove beds she targets for now. If she leaks while asleep or dribbles constantly, ask your vet to check for a birth defect such as an ectopic ureter.
