Flaky, Itchy Skin in an Older Westie After Steroids

Reader Question
My 13yr old westie had a cataract op in feb this year. She was prescribed steroid tablets which were reduced and finished middle of June. She has since developed dry flaky itchy skin which started on her rear flanks and tail, which has now almost cleared in that area but has now progressed up her body in varous degrees, mainly now under her front legs and chest. I am bathing her every other day with an aloe and oatmeal wash. should I persevere with this regime or seek further advice? She has never suffered with any form of skin problems before the steroids. Your observations would be appreciated Thank You

Answer from Our Team

Steroids can affect the skin, and stopping them can let an itch that they were hiding show up. West Highland White Terriers are also prone to allergies and to yeast (Malassezia) infections, which cause flaky, itchy skin under the front legs and on the chest.

Since the problem is spreading, it's worth seeing your vet rather than continuing to bathe at home. They can check for yeast, bacteria and mites with simple skin tests. Bathing every other day with an oatmeal wash can dry the skin in some dogs. If yeast is found, a medicated shampoo may be prescribed instead.

In an older dog, your vet may also check for hormone diseases such as hypothyroidism, which can cause skin changes.

See dry skin in dogs and seborrhea in dogs.
