Reader Question
My five month old chocolate lab has one eye that is dialated. Noticed this one time before. Do i need to be worried? What causes this? He feels fine, no head traumas and he hasn't ate anything strange to him.

Answer from Our Team

Unequal pupils (anisocoria) in a young dog can come from eye problems such as inflammation or injury, glaucoma, or nerve problems. Contact with certain plants, such as angel's trumpet or jimsonweed, or with a scopolamine motion-sickness patch can dilate one pupil for a day or so.

Because it has happened twice, ask your vet to examine both eyes and check the eye pressure. Go the same day if the eye is red, cloudy, squinting or he seems not to see.

See glaucoma in dogs for warning signs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
