Eye Still Red Despite Allergy Medicine, Antibiotics and Drops

Reader Question
My dog is now taking 2 pills, Zyrtec, twice a day, plus an antibiotic, and eye drops twice a day. His eye is still red in the cornor and under the bottom lid. Should I take him to an eye doctor? He is not itching it but it seems to look better at times then worse. He is not sneezing like he was and seems to feel fine. I am just worried that his eye is still so red.

Answer from Our Team

Yes, if the redness persists despite treatment, seeing a veterinary ophthalmologist is a good idea. A red inner corner and lower lid can be due to allergies, but also to dry eye, an eyelid or eyelash problem, or the third eyelid itself.

The fact that he seems comfortable and isn't itching is reassuring. Take a photo on good and bad days to show the specialist.

See conjunctivitis in dogs for causes of red eyes.
