Reader Question
Hi..my dog was injured playing fetch ...was struck inthe eye..about a week and a half ago ...emergency vet on call declined seeing her said to give her aspirin and put cold cloth on it ..if it wasnt bleeding it wasnt an emergency and there wasnt much they could do...when I got home from work that evening it was very swollen..I drove an hour away the next morning to my former vet..he prescribed eye ointment but it was too swollen to see much more than a deep scratch on the cornea..over the week it seemed to get worse ...as the swelling went down a little the redness was more visible and the eye looked more bulged and extremely cloudy..upon her next appointment the vet prescribed eye drops but said she has lost sight in that eye and it appears that the trama to the eye dislodged the lens?.. and that if her eye doesnt improve it may have to be removed...the poor baby is already deaf ...isnt there any chance of saving her eye or is it too late?

Answer from Our Team

We're sorry. A blow that dislocates the lens can cause severe inflammation and raise the pressure inside the eye (glaucoma), which is very painful. When an eye is blind and painful and medication can't control it, removing it is often the kindest option, and most dogs adjust well, even dogs who are deaf.

Before deciding, you could ask for a referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist to see whether the lens can be removed or the pressure controlled. Ask your vet about pain relief by mouth in the meantime; please don't give aspirin without your vet's approval, since it can interact with other medicines.

See eye ulcers in dogs and dog eye infections.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
