Eye Infection in a Farm Dog in Vietnam

Reader Question
This is a 6 month old female mixed breed. She is in Vietnam and her owners have had her for 3 months. Lila is kept outdoor and will be used as a guardian over the owner's farm land. She developed this condition a month ago. Lila was taken to the vet in Vietnam but the treatment for sick animals is very minimal. It seems that the infection got better and is now showing up in the second eye. I have a feeling that this may be something brought about by the overall living conditions? I am planing a trip to Vietnam next month and would like to know if there i anything that I can bring with me that may be of help.

Thank you for you time and response.

Answer from Our Team

Without an exam it's hard to say what will help, because in an outdoor farm dog, eye problems can come from dust and plant material, eyelid problems, allergies, parasites such as eye worms in some regions, or infections such as distemper.

The most useful things you can do are help her see a vet during your visit, keep her vaccinations up to date, and keep her eyes clean with sterile saline. Please don't bring human antibiotic or steroid eye drops to use without an exam, because the wrong drops can make some eye problems worse.

See dog eye infections and conjunctivitis in dogs for possible causes.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
