Eye Allergy in One Eye That Isn't Improving

Reader Question
I have a question about my pet being diagnosed with an eye allergy. It was determined that he had an eye allergy in his right eye only and was prescribed an antibiotic eye drop. The condition did not improve and he was then prescribed a prednisone eye drop. The bottle is almost empty and his eye continues to be red, and has constant yellow-greenish discharge. Is this something that can be cured or is it a chronic condition?

Answer from Our Team

Allergies usually affect both eyes, so a red eye with constant yellow-green discharge in just one eye makes us wonder about other causes, such as dry eye, a foreign body behind the third eyelid, an eyelid or eyelash problem, or a blocked tear duct.

Ask your vet for a tear test, a stain test and, if needed, a referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist. Many of these causes are curable or controllable once identified.

See conjunctivitis in dogs for more.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
