Excessive Large Flakes in a Young Lab Mix

by Chris

Reader Question
Hello,

My 8 month old Retriver/Lab mix has a problem with very excessive flaking all over her body. The flakes are becoming more and more large and our hardwood floors consistently need to be vacuumed. She has had this problem from the time we picked her up as a pup. She has been in and out of the vet and tried multiple vet recommended dog foods without success. She is now on steroids and fish oil and has tested negative for any thyroid issues. Her skin looks completely normal and she doesnt appear to scratch more than any other dog does. She is not shedding and does not have any bald spots. She appears to be very happy. Recently she has been out of breath (panting) following normal walks, but I suspect this may be caused by the steroids.

Can you provide any feedback? I am getting desperate as this is becoming more and more difficult to deal with.

Answer from Our Team

Heavy flaking that started in puppyhood and isn't itchy can have several causes. It's important to rule out Cheyletiella mites (walking dandruff) first. Puppies can pick them up from breeders, shelters or other dogs, the mites are easy to miss, and some dogs don't itch. Vets use tape tests, skin scrapings and sometimes a stool test, and may treat every pet in the home if mites are suspected.

If mites and infection are ruled out, early-onset scaling in Labradors and Retrievers can be inherited (primary seborrhea), which usually starts before age 2. A skin biopsy may be needed to confirm it and to rule out a look-alike condition called sebaceous adenitis.

Primary seborrhea can't be cured, but regular medicated shampoos and moisturizing rinses can control it well. Increased panting is a common side effect of steroids, so mention it to your vet.

See dog dandruff and seborrhea in dogs.
