Dog's Poop Has Changed From Dark Brown to Cement Grey

by Wanda

Reader Question
Farley's feces used to be a dark brown. For the last 2-3 days, they have changed to a cement color but still formed OK.

Answer from Our Team

Grey or pale poop that lasts several days is worth a vet visit, even when it's formed. It can mean fat isn't being digested properly, from a problem with the pancreas (such as exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) or with bile flow from the liver and gallbladder. Bile is what turns poop brown.

Ask your vet to examine Farley and run blood tests that check the liver and pancreas. Mention any weight loss, increased appetite, greasy or bulky stools, or a change in diet. A diet very high in calcium, such as raw bones, can also turn poop pale or chalky, so tell your vet what Farley eats. Go sooner if the gums or the whites of his eyes look yellow, or he vomits or stops eating.
