Reader Question
I have an australian pet bull, hes about 3 yrs old. He first had a bump that very quickly turned into a scab looking thing, that caused hair loss on his side, then it went to his back. Now he has like millions of bumps under his skin that itch and hurt him.with bald spots and other lessions that resemble burn scars. I have gave him antibiotic, frequent baths with oatmeal shampoo, antibiotic cream, hydrocarbons cream, fungus cream, flea and tick shampoo I've tried everything. I check him regularly and have never seen anything live. What could it be? And what can I do for him?

Please any help would be appreciated.

Thank you. He is an inside dog.

Answer from Our Team

Itchy bumps and hair loss that spread despite many products need a proper diagnosis. Possibilities include sarcoptic mange (which is often missed, even when no mites are seen), a deep bacterial infection, allergies and demodex.

Ask your vet for skin scrapings, cytology and, if needed, a trial of mite treatment and a culture. Too many products at once can also irritate the skin, so stop over-the-counter creams until the cause is known.

See itchy skin in dogs and scabies in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
