Reader Question
My dog jumped of my mother's bed and then he started limping my sister says it's sprained what can i do for him?

Answer from Our Team

A limp after a jump off furniture is often a mild sprain or strain, but it can also be a toe or nail injury, a slipped kneecap or, especially in a back leg, a cruciate ligament injury. Check his paw and nails for anything obvious.

If he is still putting some weight on the leg, rest him for 24 to 48 hours: short leash walks for the bathroom only, no jumping on furniture, and a cold pack wrapped in a towel for about 10 minutes a few times a day. If he won't use the leg at all, cries when it's touched, or isn't clearly better after a day or two, take him to a vet. Please don't give human pain relievers such as ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin or acetaminophen (Tylenol); they can seriously harm dogs, and only your vet can prescribe a safe option.
