Dog Rubbing His Rear Against People and Furniture

by Kathy

Reader Question
My dog is bumping me with his back end kind of like a bear rubbing his back on a tree (or me!) -- but it's his rear end he's rubbing by bumping me or furniture.

Answer from Our Team

Rubbing or bumping the back end against things is often a sign of itching or discomfort around the rear, and full anal glands are a common cause. Fleas, allergies and tapeworms are other possibilities.

Watch for scooting, licking under the tail or a fishy smell, and ask your vet to check his glands. If they're normal, the vet can look for itchy skin or parasites.
