Answer from Our Team

A half-closed, red eye with pawing the day after mowing nearby could mean a speck of debris or grass in the eye, or a scratch on the cornea. Gently rinse the eye with sterile saline, and stop him pawing at it.

If he's still squinting after rinsing, please see a vet the same day. A foreign body can hide behind the third eyelid, and a corneal scratch can turn into an ulcer.

See dog eye infections and eye ulcers in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
