Dog Licking Her Rear and Biting Her Back

Reader Question
My dog is now only just 4yrs. I have always taken her to the vets to have her glands emptied before. she doesn't skoot on the ground but licks her bot; when I start to smell that reconisable smell , off to the vets we go.

She has been licking her bottom a lot more than usual lately & it wasn't long ago she had her glands emptied.

She has also started bitting the top of her back, across her shoulders, I wondered if it is connected with her gland problem in anyway?

(she hasn't got fleas, never seen one yet, I have just done her with advantix)

Lexi also has under a active thyroid condition.

Any help would be of some help. (she does take tablets form the Vet for her thyroid)

Hope it's not too long.

Answer from Our Team

Licking her bottom soon after the glands were emptied could mean they're refilling or inflamed, but biting across the back and shoulders suggests itchy skin. One common thread is allergy: dogs with allergies often have both itchy skin and recurring anal gland problems.

Ask your vet to check the glands and her skin. Flea allergy can occur even if you've never seen a flea, and food or environmental allergies are also common. Since she has a thyroid condition, the vet may also check that her thyroid levels are well controlled, because low thyroid can contribute to skin problems.
