Dog Leaking Poop When She Barks After Anal Gland Removal: Will It Stop?
We’re sorry your girl is dealing with this so soon after surgery. Leaking stool after anal sac removal is a recognized complication. The surgery is done right beside the muscle ring that keeps the anus closed and the small nerves that supply it, and swelling or bruising there can weaken it for a while. Leaking when a dog barks or gets excited is a typical sign of this kind of sphincter weakness.
The encouraging part is that it’s often temporary, and many dogs improve over the weeks after surgery as the area heals. It can last if the nerves were damaged, so keep your vet informed and ask for a recheck if it isn’t improving after several weeks, or sooner if you see swelling, discharge, straining or pain at the incision.
In the meantime, keep the area clean and dry with gentle dog-safe wipes, take her out often, and use washable bedding. Don’t punish accidents; she can’t help them. See our guides to anal gland problems and bowel incontinence in dogs.
