Dog Keeps Squatting for Minutes After Pooping With Little Coming Out

Reader Question
Hello,

I have a 2 1/2 year old Multi Poo. I got her when she was 11 weeks old and she had Giradia. We treated it for about 5 months with the test always coming back positive. When she was old enough we gave her the vaccine for Giradia and since she has had negative test results.

My question is when she goes poop; she will poop but continues to squat for sometimes 10 minutes with little or nothing coming out.

It does not seem normal and I am very concerned. I have talked to her vet and have not received any explanation.

Could it be her anal glands or could it be internal?

Please help!

Answer from Our Team

Repeated squatting and straining after a bowel movement (vets call it tenesmus) is worth getting to the bottom of, because there are several possible causes. The most common are inflammation of the large intestine (colitis), which can linger after an infection like Giardia, and anal gland problems. Other causes include constipation, something irritating the rectum, and in some dogs a urinary problem, so watch whether she's straining to pee or to poop.

Ask your vet about a rectal exam, which checks the anal glands and rectum, a fresh stool test (including a repeat Giardia test, since it can recur), and a urinalysis. Keep a note of what her stool looks like, whether there's mucus or blood, and how long she strains, because that helps narrow things down. If she strains and produces no urine at all, cries out, or stops eating, have her seen promptly.

See dog constipation symptoms for conditions that look like constipation, and our page on colitis in dogs.
