Dog Keeps Scratching Open a Wound on Its Neck
My concern is that my dog is shedding and is constantly scratching opening a wound we have tried a healing gel bepantene but she keeps scratching and opening the wound and it is getting infected. The problem is what is causing this? I will be buying an antibacterial spray, but is this more serious and how do I stop her from scratching the wound open?
The wound is located on her neck 15 cm to 20 cm from her left ear.
A spot that's scratched open again and again is often a hot spot or a skin infection, and it may be triggered by an ear problem, allergy or fleas. The first step is stopping the scratching, usually with a cone or a soft neck wrap, so the skin can heal.
See your vet if it's infected; clipping and cleaning the area and treating the cause usually work better than creams alone.
