Dog Can't Open His Eye After Hitting It

Reader Question
My dog was playing ball this evening and he banged his eye off of our night table. He yelped and has not been able to fully open his eye since the occurance. His eye is watering but is not bleeding or having any other type of discharge. Is there anything we can do from home to make him comfortable until tomorrow or would you suggest trying to get ahold of an after hours clinic?

Answer from Our Team

A dog who can't open an eye after a knock is in pain, and may have a scratch on the cornea, bruising or bleeding inside the eye. If you can reach an after-hours clinic, it's worth going tonight, especially if the eye looks cloudy, bloody or different in size.

Until he's seen, keep him from rubbing it, and don't put any drops in except plain sterile saline.

See eye ulcers in dogs for the warning signs.
