Does Cherry Eye Surgery Need a Specialist?

Many general vets repair cherry eye, and a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist does it too. What matters most is that the surgeon repositions the gland rather than removing it, because the gland makes much of the eye's tears and removing it raises the risk of lifelong dry eye.
A specialist is worth considering if the gland has been out for a long time, if a first surgery has failed, or for breeds with a higher chance of it popping out again, such as Bulldogs. Ask your vet which technique they use and how often they do it.
