Doberman Mix With Chronic Red Eyes and a Milky Half-Moon

Reader Question
I have a male doberman mix dog 8 years old, two years ago we were told by our vet he had allergies, his eyes were inflammed and his ears itched. The drops worked at the time, however, his eyes kept flaring up, watering frequently, so I used the drops and it kept them at bay. However, now the eyes, especially left eye has a 1/2 moon milky look to it and the other looks clearer but you can see through the pupils. I continue to give him drops, but the vet said he couldn't diagnose the cause of eye problems and a specialist should be more helpful??? Picture attached (hopefully).

Frankie is a bit over weight, with no other health issues and has had regular check-ups. What am I looking at, it doesn't look good.

Answer from Our Team

A milky half-moon on the eye after years of inflammation can be scarring, pigment or deposits on the cornea, or a cataract. Long-term eye inflammation can also come from dry eye, which is common, easily diagnosed with a simple tear test, and treatable.

Your vet's suggestion of an eye specialist is a good one. If the drops contain a steroid, please don't keep using them for months without a recheck, because they can hide or worsen an ulcer. Ask for a tear test and a stain test if they haven't been done.

See cloudy eyes in dogs for the causes.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
