Doberman Holding Up a Back Leg With a Tight Thigh

Reader Question
My 7 yr old doberman has shown some signs of his back leg giving him problems ...he has been lifting his leg for the past few days ...trying to shift his weight on the other side as much as possible...I have been rubbing the leg down everyday, seems that his knee or joint half way up his leg is really tight almost like a charly horse to us. He has an appoint this week but was just curious to get feedback before . All appreciated Eric and duke

Answer from Our Team

Holding up a back leg and shifting weight away from it in a middle-aged large dog is often a knee problem, especially a cruciate ligament tear, which commonly causes tight, guarded muscles and a firm thickening on the inside of the knee. Hip problems, muscle strains, bone tumors and, in Dobermans, spine problems are other possibilities.

Keep him rested on short leash walks until the appointment, and avoid deep massage of a painful joint. See a vet the same day if he becomes weak or wobbly in both back legs.

See dog knee problems and torn ACL in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
