Reader Question
I have a 12 year old female husky thats 52 pounds and at the moment is in surgery to remove over 27 stones from her bladder. She has no other halth issues. She's been on Blue Buffalo for 5 years. Her diet needs to change, do you have a UT diet specific to her needs? A diet that restricts the amounts of calcium, phosphorous and magnesium? I am still awaiting to see what kind of stones they are, but want to ask these questions to you as I am a BB fan and dont want to swicth her if you can accomodate her.

THanks

Answer from Our Team

The right diet depends on the stone analysis, so wait for that result. Struvite and oxalate stones are managed in different ways, and a diet that helps one can make the other more likely.

Once you know the type, your vet can recommend a therapeutic food. Prescription urinary diets are made by several companies, including Blue Buffalo's veterinary line. Whatever you feed, more water helps most: canned food or water added to meals. Plan on urine tests and X-rays every few months, since stones often come back.

See bladder stones in dogs for prevention by stone type.
