Diabetic Schnauzer With Dry Eye and Crusty Discharge
Thick yellow discharge that crusts is typical of dry eye. Diabetes is one of the conditions linked to dry eye, and treatment usually takes time and adjustments. Tear-stimulating medicines can take several weeks to work, and some dogs respond better to a different drug, such as tacrolimus instead of cyclosporine.
Ask your vet to recheck his tear test and stain the eyes. Cleaning the discharge before each dose and adding lubricating drops several times a day often helps. Antibiotic ointment helps only if there's a secondary infection.
See conjunctivitis in dogs for more on dry eye.
