Could My Dog’s Itchy Hindquarters Be Mange, and Is It the Same as Scabies?

Reader Question
My dog started scratching/liking-biting constantly at his hind, leg quarters & belly, there are large patches of red irritated skin, some scabs now, & now his scrotum is very irritated itchy as well & he's almost scratched all of the fur off of his scrotum. I started applying Zymox daily & it seemed to help clear up the spots but when I stopped using it they came right back. We have not changed his food & don't feed him treats, he's been eating the same food for 5 yrs. Now my moms dog is starting to itch in the same spots as well. I have looked very closely through his fur with a flashlight & see no fleas or ticks. The only thing I can think of is Mange mites?? Taking him to the vet is very hard because he hates being confined & strange people & has even turned on me when I've tried to force different situations. But could the Mange be contagious so the other dog has gotten it...it's not anywhere near their faces or upper torso area, just in the hind quarters & legs. Any thoughts, recommendations on OTC &/or natural at home remedies would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Amy

P.S. What's the difference between Mange & Scabies?

Answer from Our Team

Thank you for the detailed description, Amy. Intense itching that spreads to a second dog does raise the possibility of sarcoptic mange (scabies). It usually starts on the ear edges, elbows and belly, but it can also affect the legs and other areas. Fleas are another strong possibility, because flea allergy typically targets the hind end, legs and belly, and fleas can be hard to spot. Your dogs could also share an environmental allergy.

Mange and scabies are related terms: scabies is another name for sarcoptic mange, which is contagious. Demodectic mange is the other main type, caused by a different mite, and it isn't contagious and usually isn't very itchy. Zymox may soothe the skin, but it isn't a mite treatment, which may be why the spots return when you stop.

Because scabies mites are often missed on tests, vets frequently treat for it when the signs fit, using a prescription product for both dogs. For a dog who struggles at the vet, ask about anti-anxiety medicine before visits, a house-call vet, or muzzle training. Please don't rely on over-the-counter remedies, which aren't proven to clear mange. Read more about sarcoptic mange and how it's treated.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
