Could a Dental Problem Cause Cloudiness in a Senior Min Pin's Eye?

(new jersey)

Reader Question
15 yr old Min Pin brought to vet for dental eval for tartar on back molars and eye cloudiness of left eye which developed quickly. Blood work done and normal and she has no apparent cardiac problems.

Vet dx. cataracts and he noted she also had hole in outer surface of left eye (forgot name) which vet said was rather rare. He ordered Antirobe aqua drops 2 x a day and she is scheduled for teeth to be cleaned this Tuesday.

Today is 8th day (Sunday 9/1/13) of tx. and we noticed cloudiness is cleared from colored area of her left eye. Still some cloudiness noted in pupil area, but even that appears decreased.

My question is, could he eye cloudiness be due to dental problem and or infection of teeth?

Answer from Our Team

Probably not directly, though infected upper teeth can sometimes affect the area around the eye. More likely, the clearing you saw is the corneal ulcer (the "hole") healing, since a healing ulcer can make the cornea look less cloudy. Lens cloudiness in a 15-year-old dog is often age-related or a cataract.

Keep up the treatment and the recheck your vet advises, and ask them to stain the eye again before the dental anesthesia.
