Reader Question
They got some ex-rays done and he didn't see anything wrong with the heart. His still wants for me to take her to see a specialist because of her coughinng alot. I told the vet about the cought month ago and he just gave her some antibiotics and just now he wants to send her to the specialist. He also found something wrong with her liver and high cholesterol. She will be in a diet, what should i do, she has a dry cough, but she's very active and a little over weight. What should i do about the liver?

Answer from Our Team

A specialist visit makes sense. A chronic dry cough in a slightly overweight dog can come from the heart, but also from the airways, such as a collapsing trachea or chronic bronchitis, which a cardiologist or internist can help sort out. An echocardiogram and sometimes an NT-proBNP blood test can show whether the heart is involved.

For the liver changes and high cholesterol, ask your vet for the specific results and whether conditions such as Cushing's disease or an underactive thyroid have been checked, since they can cause both. Helping her lose weight slowly on the diet your vet recommends can also ease a cough.
