Cost of Cataract Surgery for a Dog Who Is Bumping Into Things
Slowly worsening vision over a few years is very often cataracts, but retinal degeneration can look similar and can't be fixed with surgery, so the first step is an exam by a veterinary ophthalmologist.
Before surgery, the ophthalmologist checks the retina with an electroretinogram (ERG) and an ultrasound. One university hospital lists about $3,700 for uncomplicated surgery, usually on both eyes at once, including those tests and early rechecks but not medications; prices vary by region. If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a low-cost clinic, humane society clinic or veterinary school near you.
