Corn Cob Pieces Caused a Blockage in My Bulldog

by LM

Reader Question
All dog lovers should be aware of a hidden hazard in feeding your dog leftovers. NEVER ALLOW YOUR DOG TO EAT THE COB from on ear of corn. Although they may love to chew on the cob, break it into pieces and eat it, the pieces of cob can get stuck in their digestive track and cause a serious blockage. My English Bulldog became seriously ill and almost died this week. An Xray at the Vet clearly showed pieces of corn cob stuck in his gut from 5 days prior. He was hospitalized for several days and drained our bank account with the vet bills. They were able to save him and at this time he is home and on a special RX canned food diet. Absolutly no 'people' food allowed. We feel terrible that we gave him something that made him so sick and hope this note prevents others from making the same mistake.

Answer from Our Team

Thank you for sharing this, and we're glad your bulldog pulled through. Corn cobs are one of the most common objects vets remove from dogs' intestines. Dogs love the salty, buttery taste, and chewed pieces can easily get stuck.

If a dog does eat a corn cob, call a vet straight away rather than waiting for signs. If it was eaten recently, a vet may be able to make the dog vomit it up or remove it from the stomach with an endoscope, which avoids surgery. Don't try to make a dog vomit at home. Flat-faced breeds like bulldogs are at higher risk of breathing vomit into their lungs.

To prevent it, put cobs straight into a lidded trash can, and remind guests at barbecues not to share them. Keep following your vet's diet plan while his intestines heal, and call them if he vomits, stops eating or seems painful.

See what to do if your dog ate something and bowel obstruction in dogs.
