Collie's Eyes Look Cloudy After Treatment for Inflammation

Reader Question
Our Collie came in last week squinting and blinking. I didn't see any swelling or an area around the eyes like an insect bite. I cleaned his eyes with saline solution and gave him Benedryl. It continued until the next day. I took him to our vet and he examined his eyes. I told him it happened after our Collie ran along the border of our yard, which is all pine trees. He stated no scratch or tears to the eyes, but very inflamed. He gave me drops for his eyes.

They seemed to improve as we stayed in the house most days due to the high temperatures (out & does his business & right back in). Well, this past weekend his eyes seem "cloudy" to me. One more than the other (not sharp looking). His appetite and demeanor is real good. Should I return to the Vet?

Answer from Our Team

Yes, please go back to your vet, and soon. New cloudiness after an episode of eye inflammation can mean a corneal ulcer, swelling of the cornea, or inflammation inside the eye, and some eye drops (those containing a steroid) can slow healing if the cornea is damaged.

Collies can also have inherited eye conditions, so if the cloudiness doesn't clear quickly, ask about a referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist.

See conjunctivitis in dogs and eye ulcers in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
