Collie Mix Puppy With Recurring Red Eyes

Reader Question
Our 9 month old Mixed Collie appeared to have an eye infection four months ago and after various treatments continues to have recurring red eyes and slight discharge.

Most recently, she has been on a routine of Chloramphenicil 1%, without long term success. Her eye pressure and tear ducts have been tested and all is normal.

Her Vet has recommended a visit to an opthamolic vet and suggested DNA testing of the bacteria.

After reading this article, I am interested to see if allergy could be potential issue as well. The only other symptom I have noticed is the occasional runny nose.

Please provide advice.

Answer from Our Team

Yes, allergy is a reasonable possibility, especially with an occasional runny nose. Recurrent red eyes with slight discharge after normal tear and pressure tests can also come from irritants, eyelid or eyelash problems, or, less often, a viral infection.

A veterinary ophthalmologist can examine the eyelids and lashes under magnification and take samples if needed. If allergies are suspected, your vet may suggest anti-inflammatory or antihistamine eye drops instead of antibiotics.

Our page on conjunctivitis in dogs explains the common causes.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
