Cocker Spaniel With Recurring Eye and Ear Infections and Skin Bumps

Reader Question
My father's 3 year old cocker spaniel seems to get frequent eye and ear infections. He gets a yellow discharge from his eyes. The vet prescribes medication but the condition keeps coming back. He also has little bumps on his skin. My Dad is 86 and recently lost his wife. The vet bills are very high. I am wondering if these issues could be allergy related and the vet never has suggested this possibility to him. Any help to get this sweet dog some real relief would be appreciated.

Answer from Our Team

Yes, recurring ear infections, skin bumps and eye discharge together often point to allergies, which are common in Cocker Spaniels. Cockers are also prone to dry eye and eyelid problems, which can cause ongoing eye discharge.

It's very reasonable to ask the vet about allergy testing and longer-term allergy treatment, and about a tear test for dry eye. Controlling the underlying allergy usually reduces the number of infections and the cost of repeated treatment. We're sorry for your family's loss.

See conjunctivitis in dogs for more on allergies and the eyes.
