Children Keep Getting Ringworm but the Dog Tests Negative

Reader Question
My dog his been checked by my vet twice for ringworm, as well as by the groomer. No signs. However, both of my sons keep getting ringworm on their bodies and one son on the scalp. I have done the deep cleaning with bleach, etc, but I still see ringworms. Can dogs have ringworm in their nailsvor maybe in their saliva? I'm sooooo frustrated with this situation! Any suggestions or similar stories?

Answer from Our Team

Pets can carry ringworm without obvious patches, and claws can be infected. But ringworm also spreads between people and from other sources, such as cats, other children at school or sports, and pets elsewhere.

Ask your vet whether a fungal culture or PCR test of your dog, and any cats, would help, since a look alone can miss carriers. Have your sons' doctor treat scalp ringworm, which usually needs oral medicine. Saliva isn't a recognized way ringworm spreads; it passes through contact with infected hair, skin and the spores they shed.
