Chihuahua Favoring a Back Leg and No Longer Jumping on the Bed

Reader Question
Trinna is a 7 year old female Chihuahua, not spayed, totally "indoor" dog, pee pad trained and lives with my husband and I and a seven year old cat and Trin's three year old daughter Lupita. Neither Trinna or her daughter are over weight and not on any meds. About a month ago she seemed to favor her back leg to the point that my husband and I both notived it at different times. This was also the time she could no longer jump up on our bed. When we do pick her up to the bed, she sleeps well, but when everone gets out. she will sit on the bed and cry until someone takes her off the bed. I am assuming that is how she hurt her leg. She stil can jump up on the couch, but it seemed harder for her.

I will be calling her vet in the morning, but I was wondering if there is any pain relief home meds that are safe to make her comfortable for the night? She isn't a tiny Chi, she is about 15 pounds. Thanks all!

Answer from Our Team

Calling your vet was the right step. A small dog who suddenly can't jump up and cries to be lifted down may have a sore back leg from a slipping kneecap or a knee ligament injury, or back or neck pain. Small breeds are prone to both kneecap and spinal disc problems.

Until she's seen, keep her quiet, lift her on and off furniture (or block access), and avoid stairs. Please don't give human pain relievers such as ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin or acetaminophen (Tylenol); they can seriously harm dogs, and only your vet can prescribe a safe option. If she becomes wobbly, drags her back feet, can't walk, or seems in severe pain, treat it as an emergency.

See dog limping and luxating patella in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
