Cherry Eye Disappeared After Anesthesia: Is It Fixed?
after surgery from being neutered
Yesterday he had been neutered and over night when I looked at his eye, it had caked up discharge from his eye. I cleaned it up with a warm cloth and no cherry eye.
So could it be from having the anesthetic and being in a deep sleep that it helped his body to recover and heal an infection in his eye which caused the gland to become red and creating a cherry eye?
Probably not permanently. Cherry eye often comes and goes, and the gland can slip back on its own for a while, and vets sometimes push it back while a dog is under anesthesia. The weak attachment that lets it pop out is still there, so it may well reappear.
Warm compresses, drops and massage can reduce swelling but don't fix the cause. If it comes back, surgery to reposition the gland gives the best long-term result, ideally before the gland has been out for a long time. Ask your vet to check his tear production at his next visit, since dogs with cherry eye have a higher risk of dry eye.
