Can You Add a Flea Collar or Shampoo to a Monthly Topical Treatment?

Reader Question
Is it ok to use a flea collar as an added protection with a dog who has had a topical monthly treatment already? Will flea shampoo wash away the topical treatment?

Answer from Our Team

Please check with your vet before adding a flea collar to a monthly spot-on treatment. Doubling up isn't usually needed when the main product is used correctly, and using more than one product can expose your dog to more insecticide than intended. Your vet can tell you whether the two products are safe together for your dog and what would work better if fleas are still a problem.

Bathing can affect some spot-on products, so check your product's label for advice on bathing and swimming, or ask your vet.

If fleas keep coming back, a common reason is that the home and other pets haven't been treated. Treat every dog and cat in the house, and wash bedding and vacuum often for several weeks.
