vet says my dogs lens has dropped. can the eye be saved by surgery?

Answer from Our Team

A dislocated lens can block fluid drainage and cause glaucoma, which is painful and can blind the eye within days. If the lens has moved forward, it is an emergency; ask your vet whether the eye pressure is normal.

Surgery to remove the lens can save vision in some dogs, especially if it is done quickly, by a veterinary ophthalmologist. In other cases the lens is managed with drops that keep it in place. Lens dislocation is often inherited in terriers, so the other eye should be checked too.
