Can My Dog Catch Scabies From a Person Who Had It?

Human scabies and dog scabies are caused by different varieties of the same mite, and each is adapted to its own host. The CDC notes that animals don't spread human scabies. In the other direction, human scabies isn't considered a meaningful risk to dogs. So once a person has been treated for human scabies, there's no particular waiting period to watch for in the dog.
It's worth thinking about where the rash came from, though. If the person's rash was actually caught from a dog, then that dog was the source and needs treatment, along with any other dogs in the home. Dog mites can't survive or reproduce on people, so the human rash usually clears within about 2 weeks once the dogs are treated.
If your dog starts itching intensely, especially around the ear edges, elbows or belly, see your vet. Sarcoptic mange can take from about 10 days to 8 weeks to show signs after a dog is exposed to another infested dog. Read more about scabies in dogs and people.
This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
