Can I Make a Knee Brace for My Dog at Home?
We don't recommend a homemade brace for a dog's knee. A brace that doesn't fit well can rub sores, slip, or put pressure in the wrong places. Even custom-made braces cause skin problems in many dogs, and the evidence that they help is limited.
Low-cost options that do help include strict rest followed by a gradual return to leash walks, weight loss, vet-prescribed pain relief and home exercises taught by your vet or a rehab therapist. A rear-support harness or sling can help him get around. If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a veterinary school or low-cost clinic near you.
