Avocado isn't a good treat for dogs. A small bite of plain avocado flesh is unlikely to poison a dog, because dogs are much more resistant to persin, the toxin in avocados, than birds, horses and other animals.1,2,3 But avocado is very high in fat, which can trigger pancreatitis in some dogs, and the pit, skin and leaves are real hazards.2,3,4 A swallowed avocado pit is an emergency: go to a vet right away. If your dog ate guacamole, call your vet or a pet poison hotline, because it usually contains onion, garlic and salt.4,2
Avocado at a glance
Is Avocado Toxic to Dogs?
Avocados contain persin, a natural fungicide concentrated in the leaves, skin, pit and bark. It's dangerous for birds, rabbits, horses, cattle and goats, and can damage their heart muscle or cause breathing trouble.1,4 The Merck Veterinary Manual says dogs seem relatively resistant.1 The only dog report of possible avocado poisoning describes two dogs in Kenya in 1994 that developed heart damage and fluid build-up after eating avocado, and the authors couldn't prove avocado was the cause.8 That's why sources stop short of calling avocado completely harmless for dogs.
Sources disagree on how much is OK. The AKC's own pages range from "avoid" to "occasionally in small amounts," and Pet Poison Helpline suggests calling about any amount.9,2,4 Because dogs don't need avocado and the downsides are real, we don't recommend it as a treat.
Fat and Pancreatitis
Avocado is about 15 percent fat by weight.5 PetMD warns that some dogs develop pancreatitis after only a small amount, which can be serious and sometimes fatal.3 Avoid avocado completely if your dog has had pancreatitis, is overweight or has a sensitive stomach.2,3
| Amount | Calories | Fat |
|---|---|---|
| 1 teaspoon mashed (about 5 g) | about 8 | 0.7 g |
| 1 tablespoon mashed (about 14 g) | about 23 | 2.1 g |
| 1 cup cubes (150 g) | about 240 | 22 g |
| 1 whole avocado, flesh only (201 g) | about 322 | 30 g |
Calculated from USDA FoodData Central values for raw avocado.5 Spoon weights are our estimate.
If Your Dog Eats Some Anyway
Both the AKC and PetMD give an upper limit of no more than 1 teaspoon of plain flesh per 10 pounds of body weight.2,3 That's a ceiling for an accidental lick or bite, not a serving suggestion. Even at that limit, avocado uses about a fifth to two-fifths of a dog's daily treat allowance, mostly as fat.5,10,11
| Dog weight | Upper limit (plain flesh) | About |
|---|---|---|
| 10 lb | 1 teaspoon | 8 calories |
| 20 lb | 2 teaspoons | 15 calories |
| 40 lb | 4 teaspoons | 31 calories |
| 70 lb | 7 teaspoons | 54 calories |
| 100 lb | 10 teaspoons | 77 calories |
After a larger amount of flesh, watch for vomiting, diarrhea or belly discomfort over the next 24 to 48 hours.3 A healthy adult dog's treats, including fruit, should be no more than about 10 percent of daily calories.10,12 Using the Merck Veterinary Manual's energy formula for a neutered adult, that works out to roughly 35 calories of treats a day for a 10-pound dog, 59 for a 20-pound dog, 98 for a 40-pound dog, 150 for a 70-pound dog and 196 for a 100-pound dog.11 Your dog's real needs depend on age, activity and body condition.
What If My Dog Ate an Avocado Pit?
Treat it as an emergency and go to a vet hospital. Pet Poison Helpline advises going straight to a vet rather than calling for poison advice.4 The pit doesn't digest well and can cause choking or an intestinal blockage, which usually needs surgery to remove.2,3,1 Signs of a blockage include vomiting or trying to vomit, straining to poop, a swollen or painful belly, refusing food and lethargy.2,4 Keep dogs away from avocado trees and fallen fruit too.2,4
Can Dogs Eat Guacamole?
No. Guacamole usually contains onion and garlic, which are toxic to dogs, plus salt, and sometimes lime or hot peppers.2,3,13 If your dog ate guacamole, call your vet, ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 right away. Onion and garlic damage can take a few days to show.4,13,6,7 See dog poisoning.
Avocado Oil and Avocado in Dog Food
Avocado oil doesn't contain persin, but it's pure fat. A small lick is unlikely to hurt, but don't add it to your dog's food without asking your vet.2,3 Avocado in dog food is a different thing from fresh fruit. In a University of Illinois study, Beagles fed kibble made with processed avocado meal had no signs of toxicity, and persin wasn't detectable in the meal. The researchers cautioned that only one source was tested and that fresh fruit is a different matter.14,15
Can Puppies Eat Avocado?
No. The AKC advises avoiding avocado for puppies, whose digestive systems are more sensitive.2
Avocado Is Much More Dangerous for Other Pets
If you also keep birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, horses or goats, keep avocado away from them completely. Persin can kill pet birds and cause heart damage in many other species.1,4
When to Call the Vet
Call your vet if your dog has vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy after eating avocado, if you're not sure how much he ate, or if he ate the skin or leaves.2 Go to an emergency vet if he swallowed a pit or is choking.3,4 Call a poison hotline for guacamole.4

Frequently Asked Questions
Is avocado toxic to dogs?
Not very. Dogs are relatively resistant to persin, the toxin in avocado, but the flesh is very fatty and the pit, skin and leaves are hazards, so it isn't recommended as a treat.
What happens if my dog eats an avocado pit?
It can cause choking or an intestinal blockage that often needs surgery. Go to a vet right away, even if your dog seems fine.
What if my dog ate guacamole?
Call your vet or a pet poison hotline right away. Guacamole usually contains onion, garlic and salt, which are more dangerous than the avocado.
Is avocado oil safe for dogs?
It doesn't contain persin, but it's pure fat. A small lick is unlikely to harm, but don't add it to food without your vet's advice.
Can dogs eat avocado every day?
No. It's high in fat and offers nothing a balanced dog food doesn't already provide.
Can puppies eat avocado?
No. Their digestive systems are more sensitive, so it's best avoided.
Why is avocado bad for birds but not dogs?
Birds, rabbits, horses and many livestock are far more sensitive to persin, which can damage their heart. Dogs seem relatively resistant, though fat and the pit still make it a poor treat.
Can dogs be allergic to avocado?
It's possible but rare. Stop and call your vet if you see itching, hives, vomiting or diarrhea.
