Can Dog Mange Spread to Humans?

Reader Question
Can it be spread to humans??

Answer from Our Team

It depends on the type. Demodectic mange, the most common type in puppies, isn't contagious to people or to other dogs. Almost all dogs carry Demodex mites from birth, and mange only develops when a dog's immune system can't keep them in check.

Sarcoptic mange, also called canine scabies, can affect people, but only briefly. The dog mites can burrow into human skin and cause itchy red bumps, often on the arms, neck, waist or beltline. They can't survive or reproduce on people, so the rash usually clears within about 2 weeks once the dog has been treated. It can keep coming back while the dog is still infested, so treating your dog, and every dog in the home, is the key step.

Wear gloves when handling a dog with mange and wash your hands afterward. If you develop an itchy rash, see your doctor and mention your dog's diagnosis. Learn more about sarcoptic mange in dogs and people.
