Can Anal Gland Problems Cause Tail Chasing?

Reader Question
does anal gland blockage, cause AGRESSIVE TAIL CHASING SYPMTOMS??

Answer from Our Team

They can. Full or inflamed anal glands make the rear itchy or sore, and some dogs respond by spinning, chasing or biting at the tail. Other causes include fleas, allergies, a tail injury, and in some breeds, compulsive behavior.

Ask your vet to check the anal glands, skin and tail. If the glands are the problem, the chasing should settle once they're treated. Aggressive or nonstop chasing that continues after medical causes are ruled out may need a behavior plan.
